Gold Mine Pollution

Pierre, SD: (Apr-24-08) The Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the state of South Dakota brought charges against Wharf Resources, a Black Hills gold mine, alleging that there were several environmental violations at the facility. The violations involve the collection and treatment of water that runs off parts of the company's open pit gold mine near Lead.

Sources stated that the two sides had reached a settlement agreement, in which Wharf Resources will pay a $149,300 penalty to resolve allegations. Additionally, apart from the monetary payout, the company will also upgrade its water treatment plant, and evaluate and clean up as necessary parts of two creeks.
