Ozone Depletion

Milwaukee, WI: (Mar-18-08) The US Environmental Protection Agency brought a lawsuit against Kerry Inc., alleging that its IL plant leaked ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons into the environment. The suit followed an investigation that revealed that the food and beverage products supplier had failed to repair refrigeration equipment, which led to the leaking of excessive amounts of chlorofluorocarbons.

Agency officials said that they had reached a settlement agreement with Kerry Inc., a company based in Ireland, with its Kerry Americas based in Beloit, in which the company will pay a penalty of about $170,000 to resolve allegations. Additionally, the supplier of food and beverage products to other food manufacturers also agreed to spend more than $810,000 to replace ozone-depleting refrigerant used in refrigeration equipment with a non-ozone-depleting refrigerant. The upgrades will be made at its plants in Jackson and Sturtevant. [BUSINESS JOURNAL OF MILWAUKEE: KERRY TO PAY FINE IN EPA SETTLEMENT]
