Microsoft Spam

New York, NY: (Mar-12-08) Microsoft Corp. brought charges against Scott Richter, dethroned spam king, alleging that he engaged in sending illegal and deceptive email as part of business practices. The lawsuit was a joint effort of Microsoft and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who reached a settlement with Richter for $50,000. The suit claimed that when charges were originally filed, it was estimated that Richter was responsible for as much as 38 billion spam messages per year.

In a recent development in the case, sources stated that the parties had reached a settlement agreement, in which Scott Richter has agreed to pay $7 million to Microsoft to resolve allegations. Brad Smith, Microsoft General Counsel, stated that Microsoft plans to devote $5 million of the settlement to increasing their Internet enforcement efforts and an additional million will be paid to New York State through Microsoft Unlimited Potential donations. The money paid to the state will help community centers to expand computer-related skills training for youths and adults. [ABOUT.COM: MICROSOFT DETHRONES SPAM KING]
