Little Rock, AR: (Mar-08-08) Donna Scroggin, a Little Rock woman, brought a lawsuit against Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Upjohn, alleging that they mishandled menopause drugs. The lawsuit, field in 2004, stated that Scroggin was among 6 million women who took the pills to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings.
The jury ruled for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Upjohn to pay more than $27 million to Scroggin, who developed breast cancer after taking hormone replacement therapy. The verdict stated that Scroggin should receive $19.3 million from Wyeth and $7.7 million from Upjohn Co. in punitive damages. The jury claimed that Wyeth inadequately warned her that its drugs Premarin and Prempro carried an increased risk of breast cancer. Sources state that Wyeth plans to appeal the ruling.
