Prisoner Abuse

Somerset County, PA: (Feb-6-08) Six former inmates of the county jail brought a lawsuit against Somerset County, alleging that they were beaten by other prisoners during their incarceration. The suit accused the jail's officers of doing nothing to prevent the assaults. Sources close to the case stated that as part of a settlement reached, the county made an undisclosed payout. Officials claimed that the county will be responsible for $9,000 in deductibles. Commissioner Pamela Tokar-Ickes said the settlement helps turn the corner at the troubled prison as apart from the monetary payout, the prison has seen a number of administrative changes. County spokespersons stated that the county has improved security, bringing the lawsuit to an end. The county solicitor said the Pennsylvania Counties Risk Pool decided it was cheaper to settle the suit than fight it. [WJAC TV NEWS: INMATE ABUSE]
