Data Theft
Baltimore, MD: (Jan-17-08) CoStar Group filed charges against Centers & Malls LLC, alleging that the Lake Forest, IL-based company had knowingly sold and distributed a property information product containing shopping center data that it had illegally obtained and copied from CoStar. Case records show that CoStar won a temporary restraining order against Centers & Malls in 2007 after Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. of the United States District Court for Maryland ruled in CoStar's favor. The ruling affirmed that CoStar's proprietary method of compiling and classifying information in its database is fully protected under copyright law, and the Centers & Malls LLC had infringed that.
In the recent case, in order to resolve litigation, Centers & Malls LLC agreed to pay CoStar Group a $1 million judgment and permanently shut down its business. Company officials stated that as part of the deal, three individuals and a corporate entity associated with Centers & Malls signed non-compete agreements with CoStar covering a period of three years.
