Health Plan Fraud

Lafayette, LA: (Jan-13-08) The US Department of Justice brought charges against Lafayette General Medical Center, alleging that the facility defrauded federal and state health plans. The suit accused cardiologist, Dr. Mehmood Patel of 93 counts of health care fraud for performing medically unnecessary procedures on patients between 1999 and 2004. Sources claimed that as per the records, 24 of the procedures that are part of the federal case were performed at Lafayette General. As part of a settlement reached in the case, Lafayette General Medical Center agreed to pay the Department of Justice $1.9 million for its part in the government's case. Sources said that Patel's case is scheduled for trial in August 2008. [THE ADVERTISER: HEALTH PLAN FRAUD]
