Disability Discrimination

Denver, CO: (Jan-08-08) Josephine Barela, a Center former secretarial employee, brought a lawsuit against the town, alleging that she was discriminated and retaliated against. The suit claimed that Barela worked for the town from 1987 until 2005. She filed suit in Feb. 2007 in US District Court under the Americans With Disabilities Act, claiming that throughout her employment, town officials expressed hostility about her disability and her requests for accommodation. Sources stated that under the act, employers, in some situations, must make accommodations for employees with disabilities so they are able to perform their duties. Barela's suit stated that she has several physical impairments and that officials agreed to accommodate the impairments. She alleged unspecified officials violated the agreement in 2003. As part of a settlement reached, the town agreed to settle the dispute with an undisclosed payout. Details of the agreement were also kept confidential. [PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN: DISABILITY DISCIMINATION]
