Burning Dress
Stamford, CT: (Jan-07-08) Silvana Milichi of Stamford, the mother of 5-year-old Sofia Silva, brought a lawsuit against the city and AFB Construction Management, the contractor in charge of city parks, after the child was severely burned at Jackie Robinson Park in 2004. The suit stated that Sofia's dress caught fire on a spotlight in the West Side Park, causing second-degree and third-degree burns. Records of the incident reveal that a driver stopped at a red light saw the girl on fire and leapt out of the car to help. The woman, who told police she saw a spark when Sofia ran near the light, helped the child's father and a group of soccer players roll the child on the ground to extinguish the flames. Milichi's suit sought compensation for the child's injuries and disfigurement, and her physical and mental pain.
In a settlement reached, the city of Stamford agreed to pay $375,000 to the child's mother and appointed guardian, resolving the lawsuit. AFB Construction Management of Trumbull agreed to pay $125,000 of the settlement amount. [STAMFORD ADVOCATE: CHILD BURNED]
