Inmate Abuse

Cheyenne, WY: (Jan-02-08) A former prison inmate brought charges against the state of Wyoming, alleging that he was beaten and sexually assaulted by another inmate at the state penitentiary in Rawlins. Sources close to the case stated that in the federal lawsuit filed in 2007, the former inmate claimed he had warned officials at the Rawlins prison when he arrived there in August 2004 that he had a conflict with his cousin, who was also serving time at the prison. The suit stated that the inmate told prison officials he was afraid his cousin might try to kill him. The unnamed inmate claimed that prison officials assured him that he would never come in contact with his cousin. However, according to the suit, the two men were later assigned to the same prison cell for seven months. The lawsuit claims that the inmate's cousin subjected him to severe sexual, physical and psychological abuse. Prison officials, meanwhile, denied the inmate's repeated pleas for a transfer. As part of a settlement reached, both sides agreed to resolve litigation, though terms of the deal were kept confidential. [CASPER STAR TRIBUNE: INMATE ABUSE]
