Ammonia Spill

Burlington, VT: (Dec-17-07) Federal prosecutors brought charges against Cabot Creamery, alleging that the facility was responsible for a chemical spill that happened 2 1/2 years ago. Sources stated that the three gallon ammonia leak into the Winooski River occurred as the company was upgrading a refrigeration system. It killed 15,000 fish over a five mile stretch. As part of a settlement agreement reached, Cabot Creamery agreed to pay $50,000 in fines and $50,000 to non-profit organizations to benefit the river. Additionally, the company will also need new training programs for handling hazardous materials, and have an independent auditor look at its environmental practices. [WCAX NEWS: AMMONIA SPILL]
