Security Breach
Albuquerque, NM: (Dec-17-07) The National Nuclear Security Administration brought charges against the University of California, following a security breakdown at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2006. The violation stems from an October 2006 drug bust in which Los Alamos police discovered classified documents and several computer storage devices. Sources close to the case stated that in a recent development, the parties had agreed to a settlement, resolving the year long dispute.
As part of the settlement agreement, the University of California will pay the National Nuclear Security Administration $2.8 million. The National Nuclear Security Administration claimed that under the deal, the university won't seek a judicial review of the penalty and it accepts responsibility for the violations. The university said it recognizes further precautions should have been taken to reduce the chance that unauthorized materials would be removed from the nuclear weapons lab.
