Senator Pension

Houston, TX: (Nov-27-07) Mario Gallegos, the city's democratic state senator, brought charges against the city, alleging that he was owed money for lost pensions. Gallegos had sued the city for more than a million dollars after a court in Brownsville ruled that state lawmakers could simultaneously serve as city employees. He stated that when he was first elected to the Texas House in the early 1990s, city attorneys told him he needed to resign his post as a Houston firefighter, which he did. Gallegos now argues that subsequent court rulings indicate he should have been able to keep his job, and the lucrative pension that comes with accrued service.

As part of a settlement reached, sources stated that the Houston City Council has approved a $423,000 settlement with Gallegos. He will receive $223,000 for lost pension and benefits, and another $200,000 for the pension he would have earned as his salary increased with additional years of service.
