Fertilizer Spill

Lincoln, NE: (Nov-21-07) The state of Nebraska brought charges against ConAgra, following a January 2006 fertilizer spill, which is said to have released 3,800 gallons of liquid nitrogen from a railcar at its Hastings plant. Though the company responded quickly, notifying state and federal agencies and working to contain the spill, sources claim that the incident resulted in significant damage. As part of a settlement reached with Attorney General Jon Bruning, the company will pay a $40,000 fine to the Nebraska Common Schools Fund. Half of that will be waived if the company complies with the settlement and applicable environmental laws for 180 days. The company also agreed to pay $40,000 into the attorney general's Environmental Protection Fund. [JOURNAL STAR: FERTILIZER SPILL]
