Doctor Termination

New York, NY: (Nov-14-07) Dr. Olof Franzon brought a lawsuit against Massena Memorial Hospital, alleging that he was unfairly terminated, causing him to lose his medical privileges. The suit, filed in 1997, reached a settlement when Massena Memorial Hospital agreed to pay Franzon $1.5 million in an out-of-court settlement. Though the hospital did not admit any wrongdoing or accept liability, it agreed to the payout, stating that the $1.5 million deal will make a significant impact on the hospital's bottom line, but that cash reserves will cover the expense. Franzon wanted to bring a midwife into the hospital, but the hospital resisted it for awhile, and then hospital politics followed. Franzon sued due to the malicious intent of the Board of Managers which revoked his privileges. The hospital however, claimed that the termination was over Franzon's credentials.
