Principal Tenure

Phillipsburg, NJ: (Nov-13-07) Jeanette Gilliland, former Andover Morris principal, brought a lawsuit against the Phillipsburg School District, alleging that she was wrongfully terminated. The board claimed it fired Gilliland over the objections of Superintendent Gordon Pethick, who alleged that she had inappropriate anger aimed at parents and students. At the time, the board made the decision, Gilliland was up for tenure. Officials stated that the issue may have been resolved were it not for the tenure issue. They further asserted that the board did not want to give tenure to a principal with those kinds of allegations hanging over her appointment.

As part of a settlement reached, the Phillipsburg School Board agreed to pay more than $58,000 to Gilliland to resolve litigation. The settlement ends the dispute without an admission of liability or fault on either side, stating that the agreement was reached to avoid the risks and costs of protracted litigation.
