Jail Suicide

Naugatuck, CT: (Nov-01-07) The family of 16-year-old Falan Fox brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, after the teenager hanged herself in a Naugatuck jail cell. The suit claimed that Fox died as a result of the jail's negligence as she hung herself with her tube socks in full view of a surveillance camera on July 22, 2000. The family accused the police of failing to keep watch over the girl who was arrested the day before her death for allegedly hitting and trying to rob a 20-year-old man. Sources confirmed that the family had reached a confidential settlement with the facility, and requested that people respect their privacy. The incident led to changes including a rule that officers must physically check on prisoners every 30 minutes. [BOSTON GLOBE: JAIL SUICIDE]
