School Employee Discrimination

Madison, WI: (Oct-30-07) Linda Martin, a long time employee of the Madison School District, brought charges alleging that the district discriminated against her. She claimed that she faced discrimination after she raised allegations of bid rigging on bus contracts. Her lawsuit, filed in March 2007 in US District Court in Madison, sought lost back wages of $45,000 plus emotional distress damages of $100,000, unspecified punitive damages and her attorneys ' fees.

As part of a settlement reached, Linda Martin, an employee since 1997, agreed to resign from the district in exchange for a $55,000 payout. After the agreement was reached, a clause was put in place wherein both sides were barred from declaring victory, and neither side admitted any wrongdoing. Sources stated that Martin's personnel records will say that she resigned for personal and health reasons, and will furnish potential employers with a neutral reference.
