Visitors Bureau

Palm Beach, FL: (Oct-27-07) The Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau brought charges against national accounting firm McGladrey & Pullen, alleging that it failed to detect theft, leaving the bureau faced with a growing federal payroll tax bill of more than $1 million. The bureau's tax problems stemmed from the theft of about $1.6 million by Donna Duffer, its former controller, who had an online gambling habit. Duffer, 55, pleaded guilty in July to stealing the money between June 2003 and October 2006. The bulk of that money was earmarked to pay federal taxes. Duffer is serving a 10-year prison sentence.

As part of a settlement reached, though McGladrey & Pullen did not admit to any wrongdoing, they agreed to pay the bureau $375,000. The Hartford, an insurance company that issued a $3 million policy protecting against such employee theft, will pay $335,000. In Total, the bureau stands to receive $710,000 to pay the IRS, in addition to $250,000 from a previous settlement. [SUN SENTINEL: ACCOUNTIN FRAUD]
