Apartment Closure Injunction

Burien, WA: (Oct-23-07) The city of Burien brought charges against property owners of a Juanita apartment complex after it shut its building doors during a 2004 emergency closure. Records show that Burien filed a nuisance abatement action in January 2004 against the owners of the Juanita and then got a court ordered injunction to close the apartment complex. The city stated that they had to do that because the property owners had failed to bring the property into compliance with the health and safety code requirements.

As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to a financial settlement over costs it incurred in the 2004 emergency closure. Under the deal, both the city and FTI agreed to a mediation that was held Oct. 2, 2007, in which the parties agreed that the owners would pay Burien $200,000. Shortly after, council members approved the settlement. The apartments since have been renovated and reopened under new management. City officials stated that the suit would send a message to other property owners that the city is serious about having good living conditions. [HIGHLINE TIMES: APARTMENT CLOSURE]
