Sandblasting Pollution

Homer, AK: (Oct-18-07) The Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions brought charges against Fairweather Marine LLC, alleging that the company was responsible for one of its captains allowing sandblasting on one of its vessels in the Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area. The suit sought a contribution to the Homer-based environmental organization to educate mariners about clean boating practices. The suit stemmed from an incident that took place and was reported by someone staying at a remote cabin in Bear Cove called Cook InletKeeper's hot line to report sandblasting on the M/V Arctic Wolf, a landing craft owned by Fairweather Marine.

As part of a settlement reached, Fairweather agreed to resolve water quality and critical habitat violations that happened over Memorial Day weekend in 2006. Fairweather agreed to pay $10,000 to Cook InletKeeper and $5,000 to the Western States Project, a training program for environmental regulators. Further, it also agreed to pay a $12,500 civil fine to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Fish and Game Fund. The state imposed a $50,000 suspended civil fine, and Fairweather agreed to pay the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and ADF&G for the costs of responding to the incident.
