Fatal Bicycle Accident

Crawford County, IA: (Oct-16-07) Betty Jo Ullrich, of Davenport, the widow of Kirk Ullrich, brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Crawford County, after her husband died in 2004. Ullrich, 49, was thrown from his bicycle when a tire became stuck in a center line joint on a county road. In a settlement reached, the county, at its insurance company's advice, agreed to pay the widow $350,000. The county did not admit to any wrongdoing in agreeing to settle. As fallout of the lawsuit, Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) is banned from going through Crawford County. County officials state that the racing would not be welcomed in the county because of the lawsuit factors. Government officials there say its county roads are not designed for bicycle travel, so it's too risky for use by participants in the RAGBRAI. [DES MOINES REGISTER: BIKE CRASH]
