Doña Ana County, NM

Santa Fe, NM: (Sep-23-07) Edwin Chavez, a former Doña Ana County detention center employee, brought charges against the county alleging that he was wrongfully fired. In his suit, Chavez claimed he was fired in retaliation for workplace safety complaints he made to the US Occupational and Health Administration. He also maintained administrators discriminated against him when they learned he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer. He was fired from the county jail in 2005.

In a settlement reached, Chavez will be paid $22,000 as part of the deal approved by the US District Court. According to court documents, the county did not admit liability in the case and agreed to replace Chavez's termination letter with a resignation letter in his personnel file. Further, Chavez agreed never to seek employment with the county. [SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN: JAIL EMPLOYEE FIRED]
