Centennial Senior Center

Concord, MA: (Sep-15-07) The city brought a lawsuit against the Centennial Senior Center, over a property tax dispute. Since 2004, the city and Centennial's board have been at odds over the center's mission and more than $100,000 in back taxes. Center leaders claimed that as a nonprofit, their organization shouldn't have to pay, but the city disagreed, saying Centennial didn't perform the charitable activities necessary to qualify for a tax exemption.

In a settlement reached, the center agreed to pay just more than $50,000 and drop the lawsuit pending in Merrimack County Superior Court. In return, the city waived the organization's tax bill for the second half of 2007. The case, which deals with the 2004 tax bill, landed in court in 2005. Meanwhile, the center's finances began to weaken, forcing the board to dip into Centennial's $8 million endowment. When it became obvious in 2006 that the building would have to close, the board paid the city two years of back taxes and, according to the settlement, has kept current on its bills ever since. Sources state that the settlement cancels what could have been a long and emotional trial, and it clears the way for the center's board to resurrect the organization, hopefully with the city's help.
