Niagara County, NY

Lockport, NY: (Aug-29-07) Yehia Hamdy, a former sheriff's work program coordinator, filed a lawsuit against the county charging that he suffered cuts in pay and discrimination on the job. Hamdy claimed that he was discriminated against because of his race and religion.

As part of a settlement reached between the parties, Niagara County agreed to pay Hamdy $110,000 to resolve the discrimination lawsuit. The settlement terms were approved by the Legislature's Administration Committee. Sources stated that the county was prompted to settle the matter out of court because the plaintiff, who worked in the Sheriff's Department, was suing for damages and attorney's fees. The county would have had to pay the fees if Hamdy was awarded a settlement of any size. A trial in February 2007 ended in a hung jury. Another trial was scheduled to begin late this summer but a settlement was reached instead. [NIAGARA GAZETTE: COUNTY COORDINATOR DISCRIMINATION]
