Los Angeles, CA

This is a settlement for the Discrimination lawsuit.

Los Angeles, CA: (Aug-24-07) Ruby De Vera, who ran for District 14 council office and came out 3rd place among 12 candidates in 2005, filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that she was fired due to her ethnic origin. Sources state that De Vera, a Filipino woman, was fired as an office manager for embarrassing her boss, Council Member Ed Reyes.

In a settlement, the Los Angeles City Council voted 9-6 to award De Vera compensatory injunctive and punitive damages for labor code violations and discrimination based on race and ethnic origin. The agreement included a $125,000 cash payout to resolve allegations. De Vera had been working for the city for about ten years when she was fired. De Vera was active during the anti-martial law advocacy during the Marcos years and had been supportive of Philippine issues. She also is a staunch Filipino World War II veteran supporter for recognition, justice and equity. She actively represents the Filipino community in Eagle Rock, Glendale and the greater Los Angeles area. The Justice for Filipino American Veterans Coordinators Peping Baclig and Arturo Garcia and the Echo Park Community Coalition Jack Vergara expressed elation that De Vera was vindicated.
