Valero Energy Corp.

Washington, DC: (Aug-17-07) The Department of Justice and the US Environmental Protection Agency brought charges against Valero Energy Corp., North America's largest refiner, alleging that Valero's three refineries contributed vastly to air pollution in the region. The federal agencies claimed that Valero's three refineries, in Port Arthur, TX; Memphis, TN.; and Lima, OH, produce more than 650,000 barrels of petroleum products per day, or nearly 4% of domestic refining capacity in the US.

In a settlement reached, the refiner agreed to pay a nearly $4.3 million civil penalty and make $232 million in pollution control upgrades at the three refineries. Federal officials stated that this move of upgrading the pollution controls on the three facilities will cut air pollution by several thousand tons per year. Valero bought the three refineries from Premcor Inc. in late 2005. In June of that year, Valero committed to spend at least $700 million at 14 refineries nationwide under a similar settlement.
