Washington, DC: (Aug-13-07) Sandalio Gonzalez, a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) field-office chief, brought a lawsuit against the US government, alleging that he faced discrimination at his workplace. Gonzalez filed suit against the government in federal court in Miami. That lawsuit stemmed, in part, from the treatment Gonzalez received from his employer after he brought to light the US government's complicity in the House of Death mass murder in Juarez, Mexico. Gonzalez, a former special agent in charge of DEA's El Paso, Texas, field division, in February 2004, wrote a scathing letter to his counterpart at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in El Paso. A copy of that letter also found its way to US Attorney Johnny Sutton in San Antonio. Though the case went to a jury trial in late 2006 resulting in a verdict in favor of Gonzalez, and the governments plan to appeal, a recent settlement with the Department of Justice resulted in the appeal being dropped. The settlement also included a $385,000 payout to Gonzalez, which was ordered by US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. [NARCOSPHERE: DEA DISCRIMINATION]
