Windsor, CT

Windsor, CT: (Aug-13-07) Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) brought a lawsuit against the town, seeking compensation for the utility service it provided the town. The suit stemmed from utility usage and money owed to CL&P over renovation work at the Northwest Park Nature Center almost 15 years ago. For reasons which are still unclear, a secondary power line was installed on a building at the center without a meter to track usage. A recent meter inspection revealed that the line was improperly connected and that the town was not billed for some of the electricity used at the center. No blame could be assigned as both the town employees and CL&P workers who would have been responsible for ensuring a meter was installed have long since left the job. Town officials stated that the original figure the power company sought in compensation was based on recent rates, not an average of rates over the time period the town wasn't being fully billed. The original amount sought in the suit was more than $135,000.

In a settlement reached, the town agreed to pay CL&P more than $29,000. Mayor Donald Trinks, who declared the compromise fair, stated the suit dealt with an oversight, not unethical behavior by the town, and that both sides are happy with the settlement. [JOURNAL INQUIRER: UTILITY ELECTRICITY]
