Dr. Lathardus Goggins

Akron, OH: (Aug-02-07) Dr. Lathardus Goggins, 79, a former associate dean at the University of Akron (UA), brought a lawsuit against himself in April 2005, after he filed a discrimination lawsuit against UA alleging he was demoted from associate dean of the university's graduate school because of his race and age. Goggins is black. Following Goggins's suit, the university countersued, stating that Goggins was fired for cause and that he misappropriated at least $147,000 in grant money for personal travel in his tenure as associate dean. The university claimed that Goggins used UA or grant funds to buy multiple airline tickets and hotel reservations and directed workers to refund unused tickets and hotel stays into his personal account. The suit claimed he submitted travel forms for expenses during times he didn't travel or work; and that he sought per-diem meal expenses after charging the meals to his UA credit card, effectively double billing. In January 2007, Goggins dropped his discrimination suit.

In a settlement reached, Goggins has agreed to pay $30,000 to the college to settle claims he misused thousands of dollars in grant money for personal travel and expenses. [BEACON JOURNAL: UNIVERSITY FUNDS]
