Orange County, CA

Orange County, CA: (Jul-09-07) An inmate of the Orange County Jail filed a civil rights suit against the county, alleging it denied him medical care. The lawsuit also claimed he suffered gender identity harassment when he served time there in 2005. The suit was a bid to bring to light the fact that transgender prisoners around the state and nation are at high risk for abuse and denial of medical care. In a settlement reached, the county agreed to pay the inmate $50,000. Further, it agreed to make policy changes that will formalize policies regarding provision of hormones to transgender inmates and training for medical and corrections staff. In reaching this settlement, the county denied all wrongdoing. [EDGE BOSTON: TRANSGENDER INMATE]
