Goshen, NY

Goshen, NY: (Jul-06-07) Dana Distributors, a beer distributor, filed charges against the town of Goshen alleging it over assessed its property taxes for the years 2005 and 2006. Town Supervisor Doug Bloomfield explained that the county collects property taxes and then distributes them to school systems and municipalities. Because the town agreed to a settlement, the town must pay back an agreed upon amount to the county. The county will in turn reimburse Dana Distributors. As part of the settlement reached, Goshen agreed to pay Dana Distributors nearly $9 million to resolve the tax dispute. The settlement of the tax certiorari also has implications for Goshen's school district, which will also have to refund some tax money. Bloomfield said the district had to pay back about $1 million last year for a settled tax certiorari with Wakefern Corporation in Wallkill. [STRAUS NEWSPAPER: PROPERTY TAX]
