Bernalillo County, NM

Bernalillo County, NM: (Jun-21-07) Bett Clark, a longtime Fire Chief, filed charges against the county, after Bernalillo County's decision to put John Garcia, a former union leader, in charge of the Fire Department, bringing a change in Clark's job duties.

In a settlement reached, the county agreed to pay $150,000 to Clark, who in exchange will accept a change in her job duties. Besides the $150,000, Bernalillo County will help Clark retire at least one year earlier by paying into the state retirement system for her. The county also will reimburse Clark for all annual and sick leave balances that she converts for purposes of retirement, raising the final payout figure far above $150,000. The settlement agreement stated that Clark will waive her rights to make claims under the federal Civil Rights Act and the state Human Rights Act. [FIRE RESCUE: FIRE CHIEF]
