Colorado Springs, CO: (Jun-03-07) Kalie McArthur, a mentally disabled girl, was sexually assaulted in a stairwell by a 15-year-old boy entrusted to look after her. McArthur has anxious fits where she claws at her skin and sometimes gropes or attacks strangers. The 15-year-old boy pleaded guilty and was sentenced in the 2004 assault of the girl, spurring the McArthur family to file suit against the Academy School District 20. The teenager's name was kept confidential as he was a juvenile. He was part of a program in which students were assigned to help their special-needs peers. McArthur's mother, Cindy Starr, said her daughter can no longer be supervised in a group setting as she could before, making her care more expensive. In a settlement reached, the school district agreed to pay $450,000 in legal fees and expenses, $100,000 to a special needs trust, and $1,845 a month to the trust for a minimum of 30 years, increasing at a 3 percent compounded annual interest rate.
