Maria Chairez

Los Angeles, CA: (May-25-07) City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo of Los Angeles, Bet Tzedek Legal Services, and Strategic Actions for a Just Economy filed an unlawful business practice and public nuisance lawsuit against Maria Chairez, owner of a 20-unit apartment building in South Los Angeles' Figueroa Corridor. The suit alleged that the low-cost buildings owned by Chairez had not had proper inspections and maintenance, therefore impacting the entire community. The health of the tenants was threatened and the people of LA and the victims bear the costs for the negligence. The suit aimed at securing affordable housing and renovations on buildings the slumlord owns in South LA and Boyle Heights. Chairez had previously been convicted for failing to fix a leaking roof, malfunctioning heating, burst plumbing, rodent and cockroach infestation and mold on bathroom ceilings.

In a settlement reached, Chairez is to complete all necessary repairs at the apartment complex and maintain conditions in order to bring it into compliance with all building and safety codes. She is also required to retain certified residential property managers and immediately pay $30,000 in civil penalties. In addition, she is required to make a $5,000 donation to a non-profit organization assisting low-income tenants in Los Angeles. [MULTI-HOUSING NEWS: SLUM LORD PAYS]
