Wausau School District

Wausau, WI: (May-22-07) The family of a girl who was sexually assaulted by her Wausau West girls basketball coach, filed suit against the Wausau School District, alleging that school administrators and former principal at Wausau West had acted negligently and done nothing concrete to prevent the assaults. School officials failed to prevent Mitch King, who had taught social studies at Wausau West and was the former varsity girls basketball coach and boys golf team coach, from sexually assaulting the Wausau West student, who at the time was 14, according to the lawsuit filed by the family. In a settlement reached, the Wausau School District's insurance company has paid $175,000 to the family. The federal lawsuit filed by the family against the district was dismissed in exchange for the payment. School officials claimed that payment is not to be construed as an admission of liability on the part of the Released Parties, as liability is expressly denied. Mitch King, 42, was sentenced to 11 years and nine months in prison on two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child. [FOND Du LAC REPORTER: STUDENT ABUSE]
