University of Toronto

Cuyahoga County, OH: (May-17-07) Marcus Mazzucco, a University of Toronto swimmer blinded in a traffic accident in Ohio, filed suit against the college, a van rental company and the van's driver in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. Since the parties couldn't come to any settlement, despite mediation, Judge David Matia used an innovative technique to forge a settlement in the suit. Matia wrote a seven-digit dollar figure on two pieces of paper that he sealed in envelopes and presented to each lawyer. They had a choice to accept the judge's order or go with no settlement at all. Though the suit initially sought $3.7 million, the defendants agreed to pay Mazzucco $2,050,000 in damages and medical bills, which was accepted, ending the personal injury suit.
