St. Mary's Hospital

Madison, WI: (May-12-07) The family of Jasmine Gant filed a medical malpractice and wrongful death lawsuit against St. Mary's Hospital after a 16-year-old Fitchburg girl died during childbirth in 2006. The suit claimed that Gant died after a nurse mistakenly gave her an epidural drug through her IV. In settlement reached, St. Mary's Hospital agreed to pay the family $1.9 million. The agreement stated that the first $1 million of the settlement is the responsibility of St. Mary's Hospital, where Gant died while giving birth to her son Gregory. The state Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund will pay the rest. The settlement also created a trust fund of $250,000 which will provide scheduled payments for the boy. The fund is to be independently administered and won't be affected by a custody dispute involving the boy's father, Dominique Hale, and grandmother, Regina Young.
