Rockford Catholic Diocese

Kane County, IL: (May-10-07) Two women filed charges against the Rockford Catholic Diocese, claiming that they were sexually abused by Father Mark Campobello, who was their priest and teacher in 1999 and 2000, in Kane County. One of the abuse victims claimed that she had complained to the Rockford Diocese back in September 2002, when Campobello was serving at Saint James Parish in Belvidere. However, he continued in active ministry until his arrest in December 2002. Campobello admitted to being guilty to the alleged charges and was convicted in 2004, and has been sentenced to serve 8 years for his criminal conduct. In a settlement reached, the Rockford Catholic Diocese agreed to pay the two women $2.2 million as compensation. In 2004, the diocese released a report stating there were 32 allegations of sexual abuse against priests in the Rockford Diocese between 1950 and 2002. But the report added that only three of those allegations were substantiated. [WIFR NEWS: PRIEST ABUSE]
