County-USC Medical Center

Los Angeles, CA: (May-09-07) The parents of a 24-year-old man who died after a botched intestinal surgery at County-USC Medical Center, filed suit against the hospital accusing it of the wrongful death of their son. Jaime Ortiz had his large intestine removed in September 2003 to help control his Crohn's disease. Several days following the surgery, he was shifted to the emergency room, where medical staff did not immediately identify an internal surgical leak. The suit claimed that this failure fell below the standard of care, and contributed to the death of Jaime Ortiz. In a settlement reached, County-USC Medical Center supervisors agreed to pay a $150,000 settlement to the parents to end the medical negligence and wrongful death lawsuit.
