Cincinnati, KY: (Apr-05-07) Former heavyweight champion Greg Page filed suit against the state of Kentucky over compensation following an ill-fated championship match at the old Peel's Palace in Erlanger, where he suffered brain damage and other injuries. The March 9, 2001 fight, billed as the battle for the heavyweight championship of Kentucky, ended in tragedy when Page, then 42, was knocked out in the closing seconds of the 10th and final round. He was admitted to a Cincinnati hospital and within 24 hours, he had suffered a stroke and slipped into a coma. The injuries spawned a lawsuit in Kenton County against Peel's Palace and the old Kentucky Athletic Commission. Peel's Palace, once a venue for "Las Vegas-style" entertainment and boxing matches, was subsequently shut down and has since been razed. In a settlement reached, Page accepted $1.2 million from the state. The state also agreed to name the additional safety regulations it instituted in 2006 after Page, who suffers debilitating mental and physical injuries from the stroke he suffered after the fight against Norwood, Ohio, native Dale Crowe.
