William and Elizabeth Cure

Martinsville, IN: (May-01-07) The city of Martinsville, in conjunction with the Environmental Protection agency, filed suit against William and Elizabeth Cure, owners of the building where Masterwear drycleaners was located. The industrial laundry and dry-cleaning business was accused of well contamination, leading to high levels of PCE (perchloroethylene) contamination in the city's Well No. 3. The laundry was also held for vapor intrusion that contaminated some businesses on the west side of the square. The contamination closed down Martinsville's Well No. 3 in 2004. In a settlement reached, United States Fidelity and Guaranty and the Hoosier Insurance Company, the insurance companies for William and Elizabeth Cure, agreed to pay the city of Martinsville $1.95 million to settle the PCE contamination lawsuit.
