Hamburg Township, MI

Hamburg Township, MI: (Apr-23-07) Consumers Energy employee Guy Houseman filed charges against the township, alleging that a township firefighter negligently operated a fire truck that struck him, causing lasting injuries. Hamburg Township firefighter Chris Birk operated the fire truck the night of the March 2004 incident, when 16 fire departments battled a massive fire at Fortech Products in Green Oak Township. Houseman, who was at the scene, was struck by the reportedly 40,540-pound fire engine, causing his left leg to break in four places. The suit claimed that Birk broke the Fire Department's policy of using a spotter whenever a vehicle is backing up as he had no one assisting him, causing the accident. Hamburg Township officials agreed to a $250,000 settlement with Houseman, who missed about 11 months of work as a result of his injuries. [PRESS & ARGUS: FIRE TRUCK ACCIDENT]
