San Joaquin County, CA

San Joaquin County, CA: (Apr-23-07) Roberta Sanchez sued San Joaquin County in March 2005 when staff at San Joaquin General Hospital accidentally damaged her spine after failing to recognize a fracture she had suffered during a car accident. Roberta Sanchez was left a quadriplegic two years ago after a cervical fracture was misdiagnosed and her neck was moved with excessive force, causing paralysis. San Joaquin County supervisors agreed to settle the lawsuit for $4.75 million, the county's largest settlement in at least a decade. The county is vulnerable to litigation, particularly because it is one of only a handful in California that continues to operate public hospitals, observers say. At least half of the 10 largest settlements paid since 2000 involved medical care at San Joaquin General. [RECORD NET: QUADRIPLEGIC MALPRACTICE]
