New York, NY

New York, NY: (Apr -18-07) A lawsuit filed against the city of New York by Cynthia Greenberg, a civil rights advocate, claimed that a former senior police official kicked her in the head during a 2003 antiwar protest in Lower Manhattan. Greenberg, 37, had planned to offer as evidence a videotape of the encounter, which appears to show her being kneed in the head by the police official, Bruce Smolka Jr., a 33-year veteran of the department. The suit alleged that Smolka had used excessive force, causing injury. During his tenure as commander of Patrol Borough Manhattan South, Smolka had major responsibility for the police response to several antiwar rallies and protests. Though the city agreed to pay $150,000 as compensation, it did not admit to any wrongdoing. [NEW YORK TIMES: PROTESTER INJURED]
