AES Corp.

Delray Beach, FL: (Apr-14-07) A lawsuit filed against AES Corp. accused it of dumping over 82,000 tons of coal ash on Dominican Republic beaches. The publicly-traded international energy company has maintained it had nothing to do with the incident, alleging instead that it hired Florida resident Roger Fina's company, Silver Spot Enterprises, to dispose of the ash legally. In a pre-trial financial settlement reached, AES Corp. paid $6 million to resolve claims and avoid litigation. Another suit against Fina filed by former workers accused him of enslaving 10 foreigners at his Florida sand quarry, keeping them locked in a rat-infested trailer and using physical violence to keep them working. He settled that lawsuit with an undisclosed amount. [UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL: COAL ASH DUMP]
