Chiquita Brands International

Cincinnati, OH: (Mar-19-07) A lawsuit stemmed from a lengthy Justice Department investigation into the financial dealings of Chiquita Brands International, who were accused of paying terrorists for protection in a volatile farming region of Colombia. The suit claimed that the Cincinnati company had dealings with right-wing paramilitaries and leftist rebels the US government deemed terrorist groups and that several unnamed high-ranking corporate officers paid about $1.7 million between 1997 and 2004 to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, known as AUC, for its Spanish initials. Chiquita Brands reached a settlement with the Department of Justice buy paying a fine of $25 million admitting wrongdoing. [FORBES: CHIQUITA FARM LAND]
