Bruce Deckinga

Petoskey, MI: (Mar-18-07) A medical malpractice lawsuit filed against Petoskey physician Bruce Deckinga and Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey by Karin Lobaina accused the physician of being the cause of her husband's death. The suit filed in Emmet Circuit Court claimed that Deckinga performed the gastric bypass surgery on March 31, 2003 to reduce the size of Lobaina's gastric pouch; he died of an infection a week later. Autopsy reports show that Deckinga mistakenly connected the wrong body parts, Lobaina's esophagus had been patched directly to the intestinal tract. It was supposed to have been connected to the gastric pouch, which in turn connects to the intestine. A settlement of $1 million was reached with Karin Lobaina. [EAGLE RECORD: FATAL SURGERY]
