Bixby Medical Center

Adrian, MI: (Mar-13-07) The Lenawee County Circuit Court ordered a settlement of $495,000 to be awarded to Heather Barnes and James Hill, parents of a baby who died two days after he was born at Bixby Medical Center in 2004. The settlement was agreed upon though neither Bixby or nurse midwife Barbara Van Kainen or two registered nurses who were also named in the suit admitted any wrongdoing. The suit alleged that Barnes received her prenatal care from Van Kainen and Women's Health Midwifery of Adrian, and that her son suffered severe brain and multi-organ damage during labor and birth. The baby was born after approximately two days of labor and Barnes was not evaluated by an obstetrician. [DAILY TELEGRAM: INFANT DEATH NEGLIGENCE]
