Rent-A-Center, Inc.

San Francisco, CA: California Attorney General Bill Lockyer filed a lawsuit against the nation's largest rent-to-own business for allegedly failing to disclose the true cost of its rent-to-own program to California consumers. The lawsuit claimed Rent-A-Center violated California state law and was engaged in deceptive advertising in marketing and selling memberships in its "Preferred Customer Club." The case was filed on behalf of California consumers who bought Club memberships, or who rented or purchased electronic merchandise, appliances, or computer systems from Rent-A-Center on or after November 1, 2004. San Francisco County Superior Judge Peter Busch approved a $7.75 million settlement. (Nov-17-06) [ALL AMERICAN PATRIOTS: RENT-A-CENTER SETTLEMENT]
